Layer 00 — The Canvas

Sebastian Gower — painter, wanderer, professional colour abuser.

Painter of loud places.

Vibrant, thickly-textured paintings of the people and places that made me feel something. Real paint, real texture — scroll, and watch this page get painted.

Layer 01 — The Sketch

First, the idea.

I paint because every hour spent creating is time well spent. Art shouldn't whisper politely from a white wall — it should grab you by the collar, hand you a plane ticket, and make you feel the heat of somewhere far away.

Layer 02 — The Underpainting

The story underneath.

Every painting starts the same way this page did: a blank canvas and a slightly reckless amount of optimism. I block in the big shapes first — the mood, the heat, the noise of a place — before a single detail goes down.

I've painted on riverbanks in Zambia, rooftops in India and the boot of a rental car in Palm Springs. The location soaks into the layers. People tell me the finished piece brings back the exact feeling of standing there — that's the whole job, honestly.

“I bloody love creating. That's it. That's the artist statement.”

How a commission gets made.

01

The yarn

We talk. You tell me about a place — a honeymoon, a hometown, that one street in Lisbon. I take notes and ask nosy questions.

02

The sketch

You get a rough pencil concept and a colour script. We push it around together until it feels right.

03

The heavy lifting

Paint goes on thick — palette knife, big brushes, occasionally fingers. You get progress videos of every layer.

04

The hand-over

Varnished, wired, wrapped like a national treasure and shipped worldwide. Hanging advice included, tears optional.
